The Cincinnati Bengals needs to fill a hole at offensive tackle after Jonah Williams signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency. And it appears they’re eyeing someone who spent the last three seasons with the New England Patriots.
Trent Brown is traveling to Cincinnati on Tuesday in order to meet with the Bengals on Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
Brown dealt with injuries during his time in New England, but there was quite a bit of drama surrounding the offensive tackle at the end of the 2023 season.
The 30-year-old was a healthy scratch against the Buffalo Bills for the first time in his career. He didn’t even have a locker set up at Highmark Stadium. Then-coach Bill Belichick told reporters that he played those who wanted to do so.
The following week, Brown missed every practice leading up the Patriots’ finale against the New York Jets. He was said to be dealing with an illness, and the Boston Herald reported that same week that Brown was reportedly telling those in the locker room he had his next destination picked out.
When discussing a potential contract extension to remain in New England, Brown told A to Z Sports’ Sophie Weller that they had their opportunity to get something done, and he’d feel he was doing himself a diservice if he didn’t test out the free agent market.
When Brown was healthy, he was arguably one of their better offensive players. But injuries, illness and some off-the-field drama kept him from playing in all 17 games in 2023.
A fresh start for Brown might be beneficial for the offensive tackle, and he could be a good fit for a Bengals team who figures to get a fully healthy Joe Burrow back in the fold as they look to bounce back and return to the playoffs.
