Arsenal have been linked with a move for Amadou Onana, with hopes of securing a slight discount for the Everton midfielder in the January transfer window

Arsenal may have to get creative in the January transfer window to get some deals over the line, but could have some help when it comes to their interest in Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. football.london understands that the Gunners are exploring the possibility of a deal for the Belgian international.

The extent to which that is possible remains to be seen though, with the north London outfit seemingly flying close to their financial extremes. That’s not to say that with some creativity they could not get it done of course, as there’s plenty of ways they could secure a deal.

football.london understands that the Toffees expect a fee in the region of £50million for Onana, however their financial situation could change that after some negotiations. The Merseyside outfit were deducted 10 points earlier this season for charges relating to profit and sustainability breaches.

An independent panel found them to have overspent in their budget by roughly £20million over the allowed losses of £105million. An appeal has been lodged against the severity of the punishment, though Sean Dyche has already managed to claw back those points with a stunning turnaround on the pitch.

That’s not to say they’re out of the woods yet, especially given the upcoming changes to the financial rules that have been implemented by the Premier League. A change in guidance has meant that all accounts for 2022/23 had to be submitted by December 31, rather than May.

This will allow the Premier League to judge every club before announcing any potential breaches in January, fast tracking any points deduction process before the end of the season. It remains to be seen whether Everton have managed to fly under that £105million allowed loss for the latest three-year period, but it will be known soon.

Should another breach come their way, it may make for some changes to their accounts for this year and that may require some sales. That could be one reason that Arsenal could have a possible discount on that £50million price tag, with the Athletic reporting that further money has been injected in the club to keep it running, but cannot be used on transfers.

There’s some other workarounds too, including a possible loan with a buy option – though this would be highly unlikely due to the more immediate need for funds. Then there’s a possibility of some swap deals, which are uncommon but could see some out of favour stars such as Emile Smith Rowe or Fabio Vieira secure a switch.
