One of the few things that could be standing in the way of the San Francisco 49ers making another attempt at winning the Super Bowl championship is the uncertainty surrounding their top-two wide receivers.
Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel have been discussed in trade rumors lately, especially since Aiyuk is heading into the last year of his contract and wants a lucrative new deal.
While the 49ers had indicated that perhaps either player could be had if the price is right, general manager John Lynch told Pat McAfee that he and the organization want to run it back, per KNBR.
One thing that added to the speculation that Aiyuk or Samuel could be dealt is the fact that they drafted Ricky Pearsall, a wide receiver out of the University of Florida, in the first round of last week’s draft.
Pearsall wasn’t one of the top wideout prospects this year, but he is thought to have the potential to become a legitimate contributor.
If the 49ers do run it back, they have to be considered the favorites to play for the Vince Lombardi Trophy once again, despite what some other teams in the NFC have done in recent weeks.
They’re returning much of their core, including a defense that was the NFL’s best in 2022 and features defensive end Nick Bosa, who was 2022’s Defensive Player of the Year.
San Francisco added veteran Leonard Floyd to bookend their defensive line and give Bosa some help when it comes to pressuring opposing quarterbacks, while star safety Talanoa Hufanga is expected to return from an ACL injury that prematurely ended his 2023 season.
Offensively, in addition to Aiyuk and Samuel, they boast the reigning Offensive Player of the Year in All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey, as well as a fellow All-Pro First-Team selection in tight end George Kittle.
