Jamal Adams is still a free agent, and the 49ers are one of a few teams that have remained in contact with him along with the Seattle Seahawks, according to the Seattle Times.

Adams is a three-time All Pro safety, but injuries have limited him to just 10 games total the past two seasons, so he’s not an expensive free agent. He’s not even a safety anymore. If the Seahawks re-sign him, they’ll bring him back as a weakside linebacker, which presumably is the position the 49ers would want him to play for them as well.

The 49ers need a weakside linebacker until Dre Greenlaw returns from a torn Achilles tendon. They signed De’Vondre Campbell, but he’s more of a strongside linebacker at this point of his career — that’s what he played for the Packers the past two seasons. Adams would cover much more ground and be better in coverage than Campbell.

In addition, the 49ers want to add more simulated pressure this season. Meaning they want seven potential pass rushers lurking around the line of scrimmage forcing the opposing to offense which four will rush the quarterback. In the past, the 49ers four-man pass was vanilla — the same four defensive linemen rushing in the same rushing lanes every time.

Adams is an exceptional blitzer — he once had 9.5 sacks in a season. More than anything, signing Adams would enhance a 49ers pass rush that underperformed last season.

Adams would make an immediate impact for the 49ers. They should sign him.
