You are here: Home/ Sports/ NFL/ Brandon Aiyuk Sends Strong Message About Brock Purdy
More than a month after losing in Super Bowl LVIII in heartbreaking fashion, the San Francisco 49ers are still dealing with the sting of coming extremely close to winning it all, only to fall short.
The clock is ticking for the once-mighty organization to claim its sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy, but it does have a young and impressive quarterback in Brock Purdy.
Plenty around the NFL are still refusing to accept the fact that Purdy is one of the gameās best QBs, but wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk isnāt in doubt ā he said on āNightcapā that Purdy is an underdog who cannot be held down.

Purdy is already one of the best Cinderella stories in modern sports history, as he was the last player taken in the 2022 NFL Draft and began his rookie season third on the 49ersā depth chart.
Injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo paved the way for Purdy to take over under center in Week 13, and as he put up one excellent performance after another, it was clear that the Niners had found their franchise QB after over 20 years of searching for one.
Aiyuk has played a role in helping Purdy become what he has become, and last season, the wideout had his best season yet with a team-high 75 catches, 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
Heās angling for a lucrative contract extension before his current deal expires after the 2024 season, and if San Francisco loses him, it would be a major blow to their Super Bowl dreams.
Why 49ers signed journeyman Dobbs to compete for backup job
TheĀ 49ersĀ hoped to bring back their top three quarterbacks from last season.
But they settled for two out of three.
StarterĀ Brock PurdyĀ enters the third season of his four-year contract as the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. TheĀ 49ers re-signed Brandon AllenĀ at the start of the free-agent signing period after a season in which he was behind Purdy and backupĀ Sam DarnoldĀ on the depth chart.
āWe were kind of waiting on Darnold because Darnold had interest in coming back if a starting opportunity did not present itself,ā 49ers general manager John Lynch said this week at the NFL Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.
Darnold appears to be in line to replaceĀ Kirk CousinsĀ as theĀ Minnesota Vikingsā starting quarterback after signing a one-year, $10 million contract.
āWe kind of gathered and said, āLetās get one more option for competition at No. 2,āā Lynch said.
TheĀ 49ers recently signed Joshua DobbsĀ to a one-year, fully guaranteed $2.35 million contract to compete with Allen for the backup role. The 49ers faced some competition to sign Dobbs, Lynch said.
Dobbs spent last offseason with theĀ Cleveland BrownsĀ before landing with theĀ Arizona CardinalsĀ in a late-August trade. He proved to be a quick study, starting the first eight games of the season with his new team.
In Week 4, he completed 28 of 41 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 48 yards, against the 49ers.
āI thought he was really tough to play against, especially in Arizona,ā 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. āThe way he ran their scheme, he made them a tough team to beat.ā
After Cousins experienced a season-ending injury, the Vikings acquired Dobbs in a trade. He started four games with Minnesota before getting benched.
āI loved how consistent he was,ā Shanahan said. āYou could tell whatever the game plan was, he executed extremely well.
āI loved how competitive he was when he ran, how physical he was in breaking tackles. He gave his team a good chance to win.ā
Dobbs, 29, entered the league as a fourth-round pick by theĀ Pittsburgh SteelersĀ in the 2017 NFL Draft.
He has appeared in 21 games with 14 starts. He has completed 62.2 percent of his pass attempts with 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions with four different teams.
Dobbs should have little problem picking up the 49ersā offense.
He majored in aerospace engineering atĀ Tennessee, and has twice interned at NASAās Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The 49ersā offense might be complex, but itās certainly not rocket science.
